Yes I used the word Jihad! Many may run away from the word because its quickly associated with mass murdering and terrorism. I suppose I’ll be the one to break it to ya, the word Jihad means : struggle. If you are one of the few that haven’t heard of the term being used in the media and were to search the word- I’m pretty confident you will run into anti-islam sites trying to define the word to you. They have their opinion and that is fine, I understand that they were either brainwashed by media, an islamaphobe, or simply full of hatred towards Islam or muslims.

The greatest Jihad is striving to live a moral and virtuous life. To accomplish something in life, to go out of your way to help someone. To exhert energy in stopping evil. The greatest evil lies within oneself. This struggle and fight back against this evil is the greatest form of Jihad.

The term Jihad also means to stand up for justice against an oppressor. To defend ones homeland. A perfect example of this is back in 1978 when Russia decided to invade Afghanistan and spread communism. The mujahideen (people of jihad) stood up against the forceful communist party of the Soviet Union. With the aid of the US as far as weaponry, they were able to secure their homeland. It was a shocking defeat! The whole world was stunned at the courageous and strong willed people of Afghanistan. Where did this mighty courage come from? It came from their hearts, something that felt just so right and favored  in the eyes of God. They put their lives on the line to do what was right and good. Their wisdom and strength came from the very understanding its an act of Jihad. They were to fight back, not allow a superpower try to wipe out its people and take over its land. That the only supreme power is the almighty God himself. Russia at the time was also a threat to America, which is why the aid was there. Unfortunately, no post-war rebuilding of the country.

Regardless of your religion, race, gender, you have your own inner daily struggles and life struggles that you worry about. This is Jihad. I’m talking about our everyday battle, whether its to quit smoking ciggarrettes, drinking or just becoming more spiritual, you are in a state of Jihad at all time with yourself.  The word itself is an Arabic word, it’s the meaning of the term that should be fully understood and reflected upon. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

If you’re one of many people wondering about the same question, you’re not alone. Many people all over the world have seen or heard many stories of violence pertaining to muslims in the mainstream media. I was flipping through channels and came across an investigative tv show regarding terrorist muslims. I sat there in disbelief as I just got off the phone with a close friend of mine from the Christian faith. I asked myself, why is everyone targeting Islam? There must be a reason on a broader scope that many people including the Islamaphobists don’t realize. Their true inner belief and feelings are coming to light. Islam is the second largest religion in the World and the fastest growing. Now imagine a race track with two cars. The car taking the lead notices the car directly behind them are approaching at a faster speed. What does it do but to deter it so it doesn’t get in front. Now the same applies to the reality of change of times. Islam is growing at a pace that many people cannot comprehend. Since 9/11 there have ironically been an increasing spike in conversions to Islam. This is a result of people raising questions as to why? who? what? when? how?

People increasingly became interested in Islam, and sought after learning the actual teachings only to find the exact opposite of what was being spread. People found the spiritual answers they were looking for all along. Muslims today are from all regions of the world. Many Muslims in America are converts. Only 3% of Muslims are from the popular Arab nation. Movies, shows, news and other mainstream media like to make everyone believe that Islam only consists of angry violent Arabs with turbans, carrying missiles and ak-47s. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have seen this image increasingly throughout the years. I just wish that people of all faiths and beliefs come to realize that Islam is another religion with very similar principles. The Quran is the holy book for Muslims, a book that has never been changed. Till this day, it has been unsuccessful. The author: God himself, the almighty speaking directly with guidance and direction to his creation. Wants nothing but success for us in this world and the hereafter. Warns us over and over about following Satan into promised destruction. In fact, in a verse within the Quran God himself challenges all of humankind to get together and even attempt to change a single verse. If every single copy of the holy books were destroyed and burned, the Holy Quran would be the only book that can be reproduced word for word, letter for letter within two days. It sits in the hearts of many thanks to its rhythmic verses. I decided to write this blog after noticing that even a simple Google search now returns many negative and false information regarding Islam.

If you’re reading this, I would like to ask you, how many Muslims do you interact with daily? What do you think of them? Do they demonstrate violent behavior  Do they respect your faith? Best way to know if one is Muslim is by their name. You may or may not realize this but you deal with us Muslims regularly.  I urge anyone and everyone to please, avoid the brainwashing attempts of the media and/or opinions of biased individuals out there on the web. Go see for yourself, read the Quran word for word. I promise you will find a whole different Islam as the one you were told. Any fear or anxiety or hatred will leave your heart and instead filled with love and compassion towards Muslims.
